Welcome to the "Defective Diary". Chronicle of a very "animated" project about thousand problems, experiences and issues during the two years of production.

A grand, exciting, complex, stressful, frustrating, marvelous and exhausting adventure.

This is our diary, with visual and textual snapshots of our work in these hard times (when isn't hard in the animation world?) These are the steps followed to create a 10 minutes short film, produced by the Mexican Institue of Cinematography (IMCINE, the acronym in Spanish). This film was designed, suffered for and made by two complete strangers of the world of audiovisual media: Gabymonos and Ferlop - however, they do have more than fifteen year of experience working in "frame by frame" animation in different corners of the world: Italy, Spain, Mexico, Luxemburg...

We start this story in chronological order with pre-production, maybe even before that: a particular evening in the Ramblas of Barcelona, enjoying the street artists - jugglers, human statues, puppeteers, clowns - that got our attention because of their generous display of talent.

From that experience started the germ of the idea that was to become "defectuosos" (which can be translated as "the defective ones" in English). This idea was to use the medium of a children's story to tell about an old puppeteer who, after having been a great artist in the big venues, now lives in poverty, collecting abandoned and defective toys from dumps and garbage containers, restoring and making them the actors of his street theatre spectacle.

A few months later, that particular idea - one of many that was written quickly in a handy notebook - started to evolve and mature, thanks to the encouragement of a fellow animator, Luis Téllez, and became a proposal for an animated short. In two weeks we put together a formal short film proposal (including story line, storyboard, graphic designs and stop-motion prototypes).

Sleepless and in a hurry – as usual - in a tremendous hurry - we managed to send the proposal to the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE), Insurgentes Ave. 674, Mexico DF, from Estudio articula2 in Bilbao, Spain. Our work - with stamp of the last valid day for the IX Call for the National Short Film Project - after many delays and problems from our side, was accepted along with 152 other projects: 122 live action and 30 animated.

On the 31st of May 2009, the awards list was published. The winner proposals in Animation were: "defective", from Gabriela Mtz. Garza and Jon Ferlop; "Monarch", from Víctor Ramírez Madrigal and "Mutatio", from León Fernández.

In June we flew from Bilbao to Mexico City to begin this quest. After some difficulties, with delays in the signing of contracts, and with a rather strange way to grant and control the budget by the production party, we began working full time on the project assuming all the costs during the first three months.

Our pocket never recovered from this initial spending, and we also did not get back any money from what we invested in the film during the remaining time we spent working on it. Incidentally, this short film belongs completely to the producer - that is, IMCINE. We only keep the intelectual rights on the storyline and the characters.

On those early days in Mexico, by lucky chance we met some peculiar and talented collaborators in the project. We were talking a stroll in the city's Zócalo (the center of Mexico City). Just around a corner, we heard an original song with echoes of French "chanson"; the rhythms were close to the gypsy tradition from Bulgaria or Romania with elements of performance and clown theatre. Finding Alejandro Preisser and his band, "Triciclo Circus band " was one of the great discoveries for "defective". Alejandro, composer and leader of the group, understood from the first moment what we were looking for the soundtrack of the film. It was easy to work together, joined by a common appreciation in music (Folk, Yann Tiersen, Danny Elfman, Emir Kusturica, ..), along with his friendship and commitment. Further on we will tell about the musical pieces composed for the short, and about the recording sessions …

We managed to get the sponsorship of the Center of Cultural Arts of Monterrey and we worked there in a workshop with some other collaborators.

One of the big challenges - that resulted in a rich learning experience - was getting the articulated skeletons (also known as armatures) for the characters. Of particular concern was the armature of the pupeteer character. The complex acting and the sheer quantity of planes in which he appeared merited a special treatment and a particular care to enable his movement, and create an animation of the highest quality. We quickly realized that we could not construct such an armature by ourselves. In the end, we contacted Jeremy Spake casually via email.

This professional, known for his extraordinary work on the armatures of "Coraline" (2009, Henry Sellick) and working for Studio Laika (the upcoming film ParaNorman, directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell), gave us the opportunity to show him the pre-production phase of our project. He was interested in collaboration and he offered to build an armature with the most advanced technology (socket-balls) for the main character. We must also mention the extraordinary craftsmanship of Merrick Cheney in the design and construction of the feet of the skeleton, made completely articulated and functional - perfect to give stability to the character. His price was high for our pocket, but was worth it, without doubt. He gave us a discount after we cried and appealed to his generosity, due to our very tight budget. Jeremy made the armature in slightly more than three weeks and periodically sent us advances and a complete tutorial for the use and care of the skeleton. He is a true professional that completed the work within schedule, and was a kind and efficient collaborator. What a pleasure was it to work with him! We hope there will be another occasion to do so in the future.

Along these lines we show some of the work of those first months in the development of this animated short in the stop motion technique. Mostly: style definition, concept art, character design, ambience and props, retakes from storyboard, study of color, photo test and lightning setup, models and casts, construction of skeletons with wire, structures, models and sets, design and making of wardrobe for dolls. In this particular last point, we should emphasize the great work done by Eunice Celedón with the collaboration of Mirena Pérez, who created more than forty different designs in less than four months.
