Production (Bilbao, from May 2010 to May 2011)

A chapter of its own is what the commentary on the subject of lighting and photography deserves, being such a central part of the process. We had already done some testing in Monterrey with Samuel Catherine, but it was here in Spain where the artistic direction of the project regarding light and color was defined. Finally we were able to get the ideal lighting equipment. The technology that won us over was LED lighting (cool light), because it is very practical, very stable in intensity, lasting, more cost efficient and easy to use. By using filters and masks we were able to achieve results very close to our original idea and to the graphic studies of color and composition we had previously done months prior. David Custodio, our neighbor photographer with his studio next door, helped us out with some tricks that would come in very handy! Thank you friend!

The animation was flowing little by little. The first animated planes were like a field of trial and error, and forced us to dispose of many hours of animation that were not at an acceptable level. We daily animated between 3 to 6 or 7 seconds, if we were very very lucky.

This process was much slower and elaborate than any of our planning and deadlines had anticipated. We inevitably stayed behind even though we worked 10 to 14 hours daily, Monday to Monday, even spending many sleepless nights, for months without a break (ok, that’s not true, we did occasionally take a break for a day, sometimes just half a day, but then guilt would take over sending us back to our work routine). To this you got to add the hours invested in trying to cover expenses where the production budget left us short. The studio turned into a comic book store, we sold merchandising and offered occasional workshops on illustration, graphic design, animation and doing sketches by orders. We did anything for the cause, to make it until the end of the month. Thanks to our old books about cinema, art, comics, and our collection of action figures, for appreciating in value over time. They have been sponsors of unexpected expenditures and a life saver that still feeds us and pays bills at the end of the month. (A thousand thanks to the “madelmans” and may they be blessed for they carried the bread under their arm).

Despite inconveniences and obstacles, with quite some doubts and after sorting through some compromising situations, we were moving forward, like a Galapagos tortoise. We were learning along the way, correcting and improvising, getting better within our possibilities and circumstances, and by this point practically lacking the necessary budget for this stage. The budget had been spent on material and collaborators, including our own salary, and in the coziest and most intimate solitude of our modest, but in our eyes paradisiacal, studio articula2.

Two amazing collaborators in those days were Guillermo González y Sergio Román (Sedyas), master animators with plenty of experience, and above all great friends since our common beginings in the world of animation around 1995… It has rained a lot since then!

Terry Amaini was the digital painter for two of the 2D animations of Guillermo: frame by frame he got to transform the bidimensional drawings in tridimensional thanks to several layers and color texture with shadows, keeping a carefully illumination and shadows, very similar to the puppets for the rest of the shots.

Terry Amaini was a generous and important lay for the digital color in several backgrounds, making a nice work very fast, just when we needed it.

From Barcelona arrived the help of friends and colleagues who generously offered us their time and their art to elevate a bit more our project, taking it to the next level, like we knew they would since we’ve known them and have worked with them for years, and can attest to their quality and professionalism of the highest level.

Alexis Capera, colorist and illustrator without equal, gave us the color for a series of digital backgrounds the exceeded our expectations. The complexity of the compositions and tones, the textures and finishes were perfect for these backgrounds that we would eventually integrate with real scale models of sets in different scenes. The result is praised unanimously by friends in this field.

Moltes gracies amic!

Marc Alberich is a very precise and extremely professional cartoonist, with an original and very personal style, full of references and oozing from all four sides the history of Comics and Animation. His subtle yet always efficient ink was at the service of one of the digital backgrounds in the first scenes of the short film. The result was perfection. Moltes gracies amic!

Gracies maestro!

The definition of a cartoonist has a name and it is Bernart Serrat. Master of masters! Colleague, friend, and almost father of our everyday dreams of pencil and paper. He is the soul and body of this profession. A graphic adventurer, he is the essence of that city which we love and admire, Barcelona! He generously provided us with his incomparable sketch. Magnificent! And just to have him in our credits makes it all worth it. Thank you master!

Nada. Va por ellos!

And of course, our families, our mothers sewing curtains for the sets and our fathers building structures for them. All of them perpetual collaborators and sponsors of our lives and our dreams, many times not entirely understanding our goals, but always there, nearby and extending us their hands. They are the real authors of the authours. Without them, nothing. This is for them!

So many friends that didn’t draw, didn’t paint, didn’t model or animate, but have supported us with their cheers and appreciation, and so none of this would’ve been possible without them. Thank you so much to all of them!

Those that hindered our progress instead of helping it, those are inevitable, but we suspect omitting them is their just reward…
